This iPhone 8 dummy unit might be close to the real design

As September draws near, the quality of iPhone 8 leaks is steadily ramping up – which explains the gloriously detailed leak we’re sharing with you today.

In the month before a smartphone launch, we typically see very high-quality leaks. That’s because the design is generally finalised by this point, and factories – and often accessory makers too – have detailed schematics of the handset to work from.

That’s how tech site BGR was able to obtain what it claims is an iPhone 8 dummy unit – a fake version of the phone based on factory schematics. In a report published this week, BGR shows off the dummy unit in a series of photographs that give us a good idea of what Apple’s next flagship smartphone might look like.


Of course, this leak is impossible to verify, so even though BGR seems convinced by its veracity, we’ll have to take it with a pinch of salt. The good news is that the design of this device appears to fit perfectly with all of the leaks we’ve seen in recent times. This means that even if it is a complete hoax, it’s probably still a great representation of what the iPhone 8 will look like.

So what’s noteworthy? Well probably the biggest change from previous iPhone models is the inclusion of a vertically-arranged dual camera. We’ve only seen a dual camera used on one Apple phone before, and that was the iPhone 7 Plus, with its horizontal dual camera. But it’s widely tipped that the iPhone 8 will ship with a dual camera as standard, making it possible to capture more detail in photographs and shoot with a greater depth of field.




There’s also no Home button on the front, which means there’s no Touch ID fingerprint scanner either. The working theory is that Apple has scrapped both to reduce bezel thickness, and will instead integrate a facial/iris recognition system into the front of the phone for user authentication instead. We’ve seen a similar slim-bezel aesthetic from both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 this year, so it’s highly likely that Apple will follow suit.


Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 8 – along with two more conventional iPhone 7S handsets – in early September this year, but we’ve heard no official announcements just yet. We’d expect press invites for the annual event to go out in late August, so stay tuned.
